Orosman at Zafira
Orosman at
Zafira is a story about the contention for power among three warring tribes:
Marruecos, Tedenst and Duquela. The story begins with Zelima’s narrative about
the tragedy which came upon the kingdom. Mahamud, the highest sultan who
happens to be a native of Marruecos, held a feast in which he called upon all
the military officers of his territory, together with Boulasem and Zelim who
are both members of the tribe of Duquela. During the feast, Boulasem got the
idea that Mahamud planned to kill every single member of his militia in order
to gain sole power and influence. It was for this reason that Mahamud got
killed, after which war, bloodshed and the quest for power became the series of
events which happened in the region.
The first war
was started by Gulnara and Zafira - the former being Sultan Mahamud’s wife, and
the latter, his daughter. Gulnara and Zafira were supported by the citizens of
Duquela under the leadership of Zelim. They fought against the people of
Tedenst who were led by Abdalap and Orosman, Boulasem’s sons. Gulnara and
Zafira found themselves unsuccessful in the first battle.
A time came when
Abdalap murdered Boulasem, his own father, in order to accede to the throne.
The war lasted for many years and many battles had to be fought.
Sometime later during the war, Orosman
found strength and courage to take his own brother’s life. Orosman, then,
became the new sultan.
The question
then is this: Now that Orosman reigns supreme, will the senseless battle for
power, authority and influence among the tribes finally come to an end? As
members of the various tribes fight for the crown of leadership, the rivalry
between Abdalap and Orosman for Zafira’s loyalty and affection also becomes
more and more intense. Witness how power, honor and love weave the lives of the
characters in this classic and timeless play inspired by Francisco Baltazar’s
Orosman at Zafira.
